# Why does my breaker keep tripping?

_Breaker keeps tripping_

A breaker that keeps tripping is doing exactly what it was designed to do: cutting power before a circuit overheats. The trip itself isn't the problem. It's a signal that something on that circuit needs attention. Here's how to figure out what's going on, what you can safely check yourself, and when to call a licensed electrician.

## Common causes

- **Overloaded circuit.** This is the most common cause. Too many high-draw devices share one circuit: space heaters, hair dryers, microwaves, window ACs or vacuums. It's especially common in winter, when space heaters come out, and in older homes with fewer circuits.
- **A faulty appliance or cord.** If the breaker trips every time one specific device turns on, the device, its cord or its plug is the likely culprit.
- **Short circuit.** A hot wire touches a neutral or another hot wire. The breaker usually trips instantly, sometimes with a pop, a burning smell or scorch marks.
- **Ground fault.** Current leaks to ground, often from moisture in a bathroom, kitchen, garage or outdoor outlet. GFCI outlets and breakers trip to protect you from shock.
- **Arc fault.** Newer AFCI breakers trip when they detect arcing from damaged or loose wiring, sometimes behind a wall.
- **A worn-out breaker or an aging panel.** Breakers wear out, and some older panels in Wasatch Front homes are known for problems.

## How to safely reset it

1. Unplug or turn off everything on that circuit.
2. Switch the breaker **fully off**, then back **on**.
3. Plug devices back in one at a time to see which one trips it.

**If it trips again with nothing plugged in, leave it off and call us.** Repeatedly resetting a breaker on a short or ground fault can damage wiring and create a fire risk.

## Call right away if you notice

- A burning smell, or outlets, switches or the panel that feel warm
- Buzzing or crackling from the panel
- Scorch marks, sparks or melted plastic
- Lights that dim or flicker when appliances start

**If there's smoke or fire, get out and call 911.**
