Drain Cleaning
That Clears the Cause, Not Just the Clog

A plunger fixes the symptom. Whether it's a single clogged drain or a clogged drain repair job that keeps coming back, we find out why your drain keeps backing up — grease buildup, root intrusion, or a collapsing line — and clear it for good with the right tool for the job.

What's Actually Clogging Your Pipes

Most drain clogs aren't random — they build up from the same handful of culprits over and over. Grease and cooking oil coat the inside of kitchen drain lines and harden as they cool, narrowing the pipe with every meal. Tree roots find their way into sewer laterals through hairline cracks and joints, especially in the older, tree-lined neighborhoods around Salt Lake City and Murray. Mineral buildup from Utah's hard water narrows pipe diameter over the years, much the way it scales up a water heater. And "flushable" wipes are, despite the label, one of the most common causes of sudden main-line backups we get called out for — they don't break down the way toilet paper does, and they snag on rough spots inside the pipe until a clog forms.

Plunger Fix, or Time to Call a Plumber?

A single slow drain that clears with a plunger or a bottle of drain cleaner is usually a localized clog, not an emergency. A few patterns, though, mean it's past the point a DIY fix will solve:

  • More than one drain backing up at the same time
  • A clog that returns within days of clearing it yourself
  • Gurgling sounds from other fixtures when you run water or flush
  • Water backing up into a tub or shower when the washing machine runs

Those patterns point to a blockage further down the line — sometimes in the main sewer lateral — where a plunger or store-bought cleaner simply can't reach.

Snaking vs. Hydro Jetting

We use two different tools depending on what's actually wrong. A drain snake, or auger, is a flexible cable that physically breaks through or hooks a clog and pulls it back out — fast, effective for a single obstruction, and the right call for most everyday clogs. Hydro jetting is a different approach: a high-pressure water hose, run through the line at pressures up to several thousand PSI, that scours the entire interior of the pipe rather than just punching a hole through the middle of the clog. It's the better option when a line has years of grease coating the walls, when roots have grown in at multiple points, or when snaking the same line has become a repeat visit. Jetting doesn't just clear today's blockage — it restores the pipe closer to its original diameter.

Camera Inspection: Seeing the Problem Instead of Guessing

Before recommending jetting over snaking, or vice versa, we can run a small waterproof camera down the line to see exactly what we're dealing with — a root ball, a bellied section of pipe, a heavy grease coating, or a crack. That inspection tells us not just how to clear today's clog, but whether the line has a structural problem that clearing alone won't fix.

When Recurring Clogs Point to a Bigger Problem

If the same drain keeps clogging every few months no matter how it's cleared, that's usually not a drain problem anymore — it's a sign of a deeper issue in the sewer line itself: a root intrusion that keeps regrowing, a bellied pipe collecting debris, or a line beginning to fail. Camera inspection can tell the difference. Learn more on our sewer repair page, or book online now and we'll take a look.

Drain Cleaning Questions, Answered

Why does my drain keep clogging?

If a drain clogs again within days or weeks, the blockage is usually farther down the line than a plunger or store-bought cleaner can reach. Common causes are grease buildup, tree roots in the sewer lateral, mineral scale from hard water, and "flushable" wipes. A camera inspection shows which it is.

When should I call a plumber instead of using a plunger?

Call when more than one drain is backing up at once, a clog returns within days, other fixtures gurgle when you run water or flush, or water backs up into a tub or shower when the washing machine runs. Those patterns point to a blockage in the main line.

What is the difference between snaking and hydro jetting?

A drain snake is a cable that breaks through or hooks a clog and pulls it out. It's fast and right for most everyday clogs. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the whole interior of the pipe, and it's the better choice for heavy grease coating, repeated roots or lines that keep needing a snake.

Are flushable wipes really a problem?

Yes. Despite the label, wipes don't break down like toilet paper. They snag on rough spots inside the pipe until a clog forms, and they're one of the most common causes of sudden main-line backups.

What does a drain camera inspection show?

A small waterproof camera run down the line shows whether the problem is a root ball, a bellied section of pipe, heavy grease or a crack. That tells us how to clear it and whether the line has a structural problem that clearing alone won't fix. See sewer repair if it does.

Kitchen Drain Problems?

If only the kitchen sink is slow or the disposal hums but won't spin, the problem may be the disposal and not the drain line. See our garbage disposal repair page. A basement that floods when it rains is a different problem, covered on our sump pump repair page.
