Signs Your AC Needs Repair

  • Blowing warm air even when the thermostat is set correctly.
  • Weak airflow from the vents.
  • Ice on the refrigerant line or indoor coil.
  • Short cycling. The system turns on and off in short bursts.
  • Strange noises such as grinding, squealing or banging.
  • Water pooling near the indoor unit.
  • A thermostat that won't respond, or a system that won't start at all.
  • Summer bills that climb without a change in how you use the system.

Common AC Problems We Fix

Failed capacitor or contactor. The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motors the jolt they need to start. When it weakens, the outdoor unit may hum but not run, or stop altogether. It is one of the most common summer repairs and is usually a fast fix.

Refrigerant leaks. Low refrigerant means weak cooling and an iced-up coil. Refrigerant is not used up, so a low charge means there is a leak, and topping it off without finding the leak only buys you a few weeks.

Frozen evaporator coil. Restricted airflow from a dirty filter, a blocked return or a failing blower can freeze the coil, and then the system stops cooling.

Clogged condensate drain. Your AC pulls moisture out of the air. If the drain line backs up, the water can shut the system down or leak into the home.

Dirty condenser coil. Cottonwood fluff, dust and lawn clippings can choke the outdoor coil. It makes the system run longer and hotter and strains the compressor.

Failing blower motor or thermostat. Rooms that never cool down or a system that ignores the thermostat often trace back to one of these.

A Few Things to Check Before You Call

  • Make sure the thermostat is set to cool, with a set point below the current room temperature.
  • Check that the breaker for the air handler and the outdoor unit hasn't tripped.
  • Replace a dirty air filter.
  • Keep about two feet of clear space around the outdoor unit, and clear away leaves and grass.
  • If you see ice on the lines, turn the AC off and let it thaw before calling us.

If none of that helps, we'll find the cause.

How an AC Repair Visit Works

  1. You call or book online. A $49 dispatch fee applies, and it goes toward any repair you approve.
  2. A licensed technician diagnoses the system. We look for the root cause, not just the symptom.
  3. You get a written quote before work begins. We don't bill hourly, so the price you approve is the price you pay. See our upfront pricing promise.
  4. We repair it and explain what we did. We repair first, and we'll only talk about replacement if it really is the better value.

Repair or Replace?

Most AC problems are a repair. But a system that is 10 to 15 years old, still runs on R-22 refrigerant, or has needed several repairs in the last couple of summers may cost more to keep fixing than to replace. We will give you an honest read on both. If replacement makes sense, see AC installation, where financing options through Synchrony Bank are available.

Real reviews from Salt Lake Valley homeowners

They were super easy and prompt to schedule with. Braden, Kyle, and Mike did a great job of installing the HVAC. They also explained everything they did and made sure I had all the information I needed. I was also given some good pointers on how to protect my system as I put new drywall in. …

Would definitely recommend Kyle! Not knowing much about a/c or furnace issues, Kyle painted the picture and gave me honest feedback and guidance. I felt like he was looking to help our situation and not sell me on something. I will definitely refer to family and friends

Tune-Ups Prevent Summer Breakdowns

A seasonal tune-up is the cheapest way to avoid an emergency call in the middle of July. We clean the coils, check the electrical components and the condensate drain, and catch worn parts before they fail. See our HVAC maintenance page and our current specials for tune-up offers.

The Aireo Home Care Plan is $20 a month and includes two HVAC visits (a furnace tune-up and an AC tune-up), a plumbing visit with a standard tank water heater flush, and an electrical system evaluation.

AC Repair Questions, Answered

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

Common causes are a dirty filter or coil, low refrigerant from a leak, a failed capacitor in the outdoor unit, or a frozen evaporator coil. Check the filter and the outdoor unit first, and call us if the problem continues.

Why is there ice on my AC?

Ice usually means restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the system off so the ice can melt, replace the filter, and call for service. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.

Why is water leaking from my air conditioner?

A clogged condensate drain line is the usual cause. The line backs up and the water overflows the pan. We clear the drain and check the pan and the float switch so it doesn't happen again.

How much does an AC repair cost?

It depends on what we find. The visit has a $49 dispatch fee, applied toward repairs you approve, and you get a written quote before any work starts. We don't bill by the hour. See our pricing page.

How long should an air conditioner last?

Many central air conditioners are nearing the end of their useful life at 10 to 15 years, and regular tune-ups help. If yours is that age or older and has repeated problems, the cost of repairs often stops making sense, so it's worth comparing repairs with a replacement.

Our AC not cooling checklist goes step by step through thermostat, filter, breaker, ice and drain checks, and tells you when to stop and call.
