Older Salt Lake City Homes Raise Different Questions

Much of Salt Lake City's housing stock, including the bungalows and cottages in neighborhoods like the Avenues, Sugar House and Yalecrest, was built decades before anyone planned for central air, electric ranges or an EV in the garage. In homes like that, a panel project is rarely just about the box on the wall. Depending on the age of the house, we may find a 60-amp fuse panel, a 100-amp panel that is already full, two-prong ungrounded circuits, or older wiring that has been added onto over the years. A panel upgrade is often the moment to look at those things together, because the electrician is already opening up the service.

Replace, Upgrade or Add a Subpanel?

A panel replacement swaps the box and breakers, often at the same amperage, when the equipment is old, damaged or a known problem. A service upgrade raises the main amperage, typically from 100 to 200 amps, and can involve a new meter base and service conductors. A subpanel adds breaker space for a garage, basement finish or addition without replacing the main panel, and is sometimes the least expensive answer if the main has the capacity.

We start with a load calculation, which adds up what the home is likely to draw at once, including what you plan to add. That tells us whether you need more amperage or just more space, so you are not sold a bigger panel than the house needs.

What Is Driving Upgrades Right Now

Permits, Inspection and Rocky Mountain Power

Panel replacements and service upgrades need a permit and an inspection. We handle both. For a service upgrade, power has to be disconnected at the meter while the work is done, which means coordinating with Rocky Mountain Power. We explain the sequence and the likely outage window ahead of time so you can plan around it.

Surge Protection While the Panel Is Open

A panel upgrade is the cheapest time to add whole-home surge protection, since the electrician is already working at the service entrance.
