Electrical Safety Inspections
for Wasatch Front Homes
When a Safety Inspection Makes Sense
An inspection is worth scheduling anytime you're relying on wiring you didn't install or haven't verified yourself. That includes buying a home, especially an older one along the Wasatch Front where original wiring may still be in place decades later; moving into a home where a previous owner did their own electrical work without a permit; meeting an insurance carrier's requirement before binding or renewing a policy; and before starting a major renovation, so you know what you're working with before walls come down.
What Gets Checked
A thorough inspection covers the whole system, not just what's easy to see. We check the panel itself — its condition, age, capacity against your home's actual load, and whether the breakers are functioning correctly. We identify the wiring type and its age throughout the home, including aluminum branch wiring or knob-and-tube wiring, both of which still turn up in older Wasatch Front homes and carry known safety considerations that differ from modern copper wiring. We test GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, and other required locations, and AFCI protection on circuits where it's required by code. We also verify the home's grounding system is intact and connected as it should be — a detail that's often overlooked in older homes that predate current grounding requirements.
What You'll Receive
After the inspection, you get a written report detailing exactly what was checked and what we found, in plain language rather than code citations you need an electrician to translate. If we identify anything that needs correcting — an ungrounded circuit, missing GFCI protection, or wiring that's reached the end of its safe service life — the report comes with a clear, itemized estimate for the fix, so you can decide what to prioritize and what can wait. There's no pressure to do everything at once; you'll know what's urgent and what isn't.
Related Work We Often Find Ourselves Recommending
Two issues come up often enough in inspections that it's worth mentioning them directly: an undersized or aging panel (see our panel upgrade page), and general wiring problems that show up as flickering lights or warm outlets even outside of a full inspection (see electrical repair).
