The Right Thermostat.
Wired Right.
Most thermostat problems are matching problems
Buying a thermostat off a shelf and swapping it in works about as often as you'd hope with anything that involves low-voltage wiring and a handful of equipment types. The usual trouble spots are a missing common (C) wire, a heat pump that needs a reversing valve setting, two-stage or variable-speed equipment that wants a thermostat able to control it, and old line-voltage thermostats on baseboard heat that look similar but run on completely different power. We sort that out before anything is mounted.
What we check before installing
We look at what your furnace, air conditioner or heat pump actually needs: single-stage or multi-stage heating and cooling, whether it's a heat pump with auxiliary or emergency heat, whether you have a humidifier or other accessory the thermostat should control, and whether there's a usable common wire. If the wire is missing, there are fixes, from using a spare conductor in the cable to a power adapter kit, and we'll tell you which makes sense.
Smart, programmable or basic
Smart thermostats learn your schedule or follow one you set, let you adjust from your phone, and report runtime data. They earn their cost in homes where the schedule changes, where someone travels, or where you want alerts if the house is too cold or hot while you're away.
Programmable thermostats run a fixed weekly schedule with no Wi-Fi. They are a good fit if your routine is predictable and you don't want another account to manage.
Basic non-programmable models are fine for a rental or a second residence, though you leave savings on the table.
A word on heat pumps
If you have a heat pump, or are thinking about adding one, thermostat choice matters more than with a furnace. Large setbacks can trigger expensive backup heat when the system tries to recover quickly, so heat pump setups usually do better with gentler schedule changes and a thermostat designed to manage staging. We set that up with you. If you're weighing a heat pump, read about heat pump installation and check the rebates available in Utah.
What savings to expect
The U.S. Department of Energy says you can save up to about 10 percent a year on heating and cooling by turning the thermostat back 7 to 10 degrees for eight hours a day from its normal setting. Your own result depends on the house, the equipment, and whether you actually use the schedule, so treat it as a ceiling and not a promise. A thermostat can't make up for a failing furnace or a poorly insulated attic.
What the visit looks like
We turn off power to the equipment, label and photograph the existing wiring, mount and level the new unit, connect it, and test heating, cooling and fan operation. We then walk you through the schedule, the app if it has one, and what the settings mean in plain language. We also remove the old thermostat.
Price
Thermostat work starts with our dispatch fee of $49 for HVAC, applied toward any approved work, and a written quote before we begin. The total depends on the thermostat you choose and whether wiring changes are needed.
Thermostat acting up?
If the screen is blank, the system won't respond, or the temperature display doesn't match the room, it might be the thermostat or it might be the equipment. Our furnace repair and AC repair technicians can tell which, and often fix it on the same visit.
Thermostat Replacement and Repair Across the Valley
People often search for thermostat repair and replacement in the same breath, because a thermostat that won't respond is sometimes a dead battery or a loose wire and sometimes a part that has simply worn out. We replace and install thermostats in Salt Lake City, Murray, Sandy, Layton, Kaysville, Farmington, Bountiful, Centerville and the rest of our service area.
