Ductless Mini-Split Installation
Zoned Comfort, No Ductwork Required

Room additions, converted garages, and older homes without existing ductwork all have one thing in common: a ductless mini-split can heat and cool them without tearing open a single wall.

What Is a Ductless Mini-Split System?

A mini-split system pairs a compact outdoor compressor with one or more wall-mounted (or ceiling-cassette) indoor units, connected by a small refrigerant line set and a single electrical conduit run through a 3-inch hole in the wall. There's no ductwork to install, insulate, or lose efficiency through. Each indoor unit has its own thermostat control, so you're heating and cooling only the space that's actually in use.

Where Mini-Splits Make the Most Sense

We install mini-splits most often in a handful of recurring situations around the Wasatch Front:

  • Room additions and bonus rooms. Extending existing ductwork to a new addition is often impractical or impossible; a dedicated mini-split solves it without touching the main system.
  • Garages and detached shops. A converted garage, home gym, or workshop rarely has any HVAC connection at all — a single-zone mini-split gets it heated and cooled on its own circuit.
  • Homes with no ductwork. Some of the older homes in the Avenues, Sugar House, and similar historic Salt Lake City neighborhoods were built with radiator or baseboard heat and never had ducts installed. Mini-splits add cooling and supplemental heating without any duct construction.
  • Room-by-room zoning. A bonus room over the garage that's always too hot, or a basement that's always too cold — a mini-split zone fixes the one room that a whole-house system can't balance.
  • Additions to historic homes. Where modifying original plaster, trim, or masonry to run ductwork isn't an option, the small line-set penetration required for a mini-split is far less invasive.

Single-Zone vs. Multi-Zone Systems

A single-zone system connects one outdoor unit to one indoor head — the right fit for a garage, addition, or single problem room. A multi-zone system connects one outdoor unit to two, three, or more indoor heads throughout a home, each with independent temperature control. Multi-zone systems cost more upfront than single-zone but less than installing several separate single-zone systems, and they're a common option for homes that want ductless coverage across multiple rooms without multiple outdoor condensers.

Efficiency

Because mini-splits use inverter-driven variable-speed compressors, they modulate output to match the actual load in the room rather than cycling fully on and off. That typically makes them significantly more efficient than a single window unit or electric baseboard heat, and many models handle outdoor temperatures well below freezing, making them viable as a home's primary heat source in a converted space, not just a summer cooling add-on.

What Installation Day Looks Like

A single-zone installation is usually a one-day job: mounting the indoor unit and outdoor pad, running the line set and electrical whip, evacuating and charging the refrigerant lines, and testing the system through a full heating and cooling cycle. Multi-zone installs with several indoor heads typically take one to two days depending on the number of zones and line-set routing. Every job includes a written quote before work starts — see our upfront pricing promise.

Mini-splits are a form of heat pump, so many of the same efficiency and rebate incentives apply — check our available rebates page for current programs. And whether you're adding a single zone or converting a whole home to ductless, our maintenance plans keep the system running efficiently for years, while our heat pump repair team is trained on this equipment if anything needs attention down the road.
